Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Does Installation Usually Take?

Installation times can vary due to the difference in the work involved. Our work varies from installing a stove and liner to your existing opening which will usually be completed within a day, through to a full redesign of your chimney breast including building work and installation of stove, fireplace and flue which can take up to three days.

How Easy are Wood Burning Stoves to Light?

Some people have distant childhood memories, or perhaps more recent personal experience, of an open fireplace which was notoriously difficult to light. A modern wood burning stove is in fact very easy and quick to get going, and the best materials are freely available: crumpled-up sheets of newspaper or a firelighter and a handful of dry kindling wood. One match should be all that is needed, and within a couple of minutes the fire is roaring away, and small logs can be added.

How Often Should I Sweep My Chimney?

HETAS recommend at least once a year for wood burning stoves. It may be advisable to sweep your chimney more frequently if you are burning solid mineral fuel or not burning your wood cleanly. A reliable, certified chimney sweep should be able to advise you on sweeping frequency.

Looking for a Multi-fuel stove?

As an alternative to wood burning stoves, we also install multi-fuel options which can burn wood and smokeless fuel. This offers the stove owner the flexibility to use a number of fuel options. Although the installation cost is generally the same, the multi-fuel stove itself is likely to be more expensive as it has an additional grate.

Why choose Summerfield Fires Ltd?

Summerfield Ltd are a family company that has built its reputation over many years of satisfying customers. We have HETAS approved installers and can organise your entire installation from start to finish. Although we can give you indicative prices for your installation and your choice of woodburner over the phone, for every installation we arrange a free site survey so that we can finalise the installation requirements and offer you a more formal quotation.

What do people say about us?

We usually dread having work done on our listed cottage.  More often than not we're subjected to endless tooth sucking and foreseen problems.
Chris and Tim were a breath of fresh air with a common sense approach to their work and nothing was too much trouble!  They were a delight to have around and left us with a house that looked tidier than before they'd arrived and two wonderfully efficient woodburning stoves.  Competitively priced too.
We couldn't recommend them more highly.

Many thanks for the care and efficiency with which you dealt with this project. We are very pleased with the results.

Fantastic Product, Fantastic Service

From quotation to installation the process of owning and enjoying my Morso multi-fuel burner couldn't have been easier.  Chris and his team have created a firepace and installed a liner, oak mantel and slate hearth to complement the stove and the net effect is beyond my expectations.

I highly recommend Summerfield - the team are TIDY, professional and excellent value for money.

Chris and Tim are very professional and committed to their craft. We were impressed by the work they carried out for a near neighbour, and invited them to quote for a similar wood stove installation for us.

We received very careful advice and suggestions how best to adapt our hearth to accommodate the wood stove. We agreed a design with them having had their undivided attention for two hours to get it right, and later received a very acceptable quotation together with a “mock-up” photo of what the result would look like.  We were very impressed by their care and attention to detail.

This was confirmed throughout the installation over three days, which was not rushed in any way. They were also flexible and suggested a good amendment to the design to overcome an unexpected circumstance, and which in fact produced an even better outcome than the original. We are especially delighted with the beautiful oak surround they designed and constructed, with the very effective corbel supports to the hearth shelf. We were also impressed that they searched out matching tiles to the original long installed hearth tiles, another indication of the care and trouble they take over their work.

This enthusiastic endorsement is not “over the top” in any way, and we unreservedly recommend this company to anyone contemplating similar work in their home. (Our son has already done so!)

I was recommended to Summerfield Limited by a chimney sweep who discovered the severely dilapidated state of the liner attached to a multi fuel stove.  The sweep had never met Tim or Chris before but had been impressed by the fact that they had telephoned him one day out of the blue to enquire where it would be best to situate a trap for access to sweep a chimney on which they were working at the time.  I asked two fireplace specialists to visit the site to see what was required and provide a quote for the work.  It was obvious thar Tim and Chris knew what they were talking about and were keen to get the job done right.  Their quote was also a little cheaper than the competitor so the deal was struck,  Having the two brothers in the house was made especially easy by their charm, skill, wit and good humour coupled with an ardent desire to provide a top class service with no unnecessary extras or fuss.  They were hindered on the first of the two days by a supplier providing an incorrect part but they stayed on very late in the freezing weather to catch up and so not only complete my job on time but also arrive on schedule for their next job.

Fantastic!

Summerfield Fires fitted a new woodburner for me.  They rendered the existing chimney opening, laid a new hearth, lined the chimney and fitted the new wood burner.  They were always polite and incredibly neat and tidy.

I would thoroughly recommend Chris and his team.

Why choose a traditional Wood burning Stove?

There is nothing more captivating than the sound and smell of a wood burning stove and the warmth and cosiness is difficult to achieve with any other form of heating. Thanks to a wide range of stove styles, sizes and finishes, it is easy to find one that will match your decor and complement your home style. Apart from the sheer pleasure of heating your home with a wood burning stove, there are a number of practical benefits to gain from having a woodburner installed:

Stove location flexibility
A stove can be installed virtually anywhere in the home, as long as there is a safe way to run a flue pipe to the outside of the house. Having a chimney may not always be necessary. Although installation will, of course, be cheaper and easier if your home already has a traditional chimney, you can get a special insulated stainless steel pipe fitted which will run through the roof or wall of your home to let the smoke out. This means you can heat most rooms or spaces within your home with a few well-placed stoves, reducing your central heating requirements.

Exceptional heating
By far the biggest advantage homeowners have with a woodburner is the quality of heat the stove gives off. Wood burning stoves operate on the principals of radiant and convected heat, which warms a room quickly and efficiently. The powerful heat radiates from all sides of the stove as well as the top, sending warmth in all directions.

Economical heating
Wood is a relatively inexpensive fuel source. It costs less per kWH than oil, gas or electricity. With new regulations it is important to burn only seasoned logs with less than 20% moisture content as these will minimise pollutants and increase efficiency. Kiln dried wood has less than 20% moisture but is more expensive than seasoned logs. Some stove owners collect free wood but as this is much wetter, it will need drying out and it can take as long as two years. Although there are the initial costs of the stove purchase and the installation, long-term financial benefits are achievable. The Stove Industry Alliance (SIA) says that a wood burning stove is 77% cheaper per kilowatt hour (kWH) to run than an electric fire, 29% cheaper than a gas fire, and around 43% and 50% cheaper than an oil and LPG fire respectively.

Better for the environment
Compared with using fossil fuels for heat (natural gas, propane, coal, etc.) wood is much more eco-friendly. It is considered “carbon-neutral,” which means when it burns, it doesn’t add additional carbon dioxide to the environment. This is because in its natural state as a tree, wood absorbs carbon dioxide that’s in the atmosphere. During combustion, a balance is maintained. If considering an investment in a new wood burning stove, it is wise to buy one that adheres to the prevailing and planned regulations. If you live in a town or city or a built up area, it is likely that the area has been deemed a smokeless zone, and a Defra approved stove would be required. You may wish to check the status of your area with your local council.

Provides heat during power cuts
If you live in a region that has occasional power outages throughout the winter, you know how valuable a heat source that is 100% self-contained can be. With a dependable wood stove, you’ll stay warm around the clock, regardless of your home’s supply of gas or electricity.

Improved sales potential of your home
A woodburner is considered an asset when selling a property and is a great focal point in a home. Some property developers have started installing stoves in houses as they consider it makes them more appealing to buyers. They can provide a sense of charm and ambience to a property giving the house that warm heart as you sit around with friends and family on winter evenings.
